Despite always being intrigued by the vast range of physical characteristics of animals across the kingdom, it was an interest in the study of forensics, both biological and physical, along with an insatiable curiosity about the world in which we live, which drew me to studying biology and physics at Durham. It was the former, however, which led me to choose my Masters research project. In my project I will be extracting frequency wavebands of the dawn chorus from birds across the world to study the spatial patterns of birdsong. Mapping audio files to known population distributions will create summary soundscapes highlighting song diversity across world habitats. The second part of my research project will involve using image processing software to obtain colour spectra of bird species with an aim to quantify global patterns of colouration and use this information to direct conservation efforts and increase wildlife tourism. In my spare time I am a massive fan of anything outdoors (with bonus points if it involves animals!) from climbing the Durian Alps, to kayaking with orcas in Canada, to simply cycling through the local countryside.
